CARBO CONSULT and ENGINEERING (Pty) Ltd
Johannesburg, South Africa
The company was established in 1978 as Illies Engineering (Pty) Ltd and was part of the Illies Southern Africa Group, trading as EREX and supplying industrial machinery and plants. It also carried out special engineering tasks for it’s sister company Styria Engineering (Pty) Ltd, in Sebenza, Edenvale a stainless steel fabrication works. In 1994, Gero Eckermann and partner Günther A Freudendahl, bought the company from the Illies Group and changed the name to Carbo Consult & Engineering (Pty) Ltd. (“CCE”). The company also represents the interest of Carbo Consult - Gesellschaft für Umwelt- und Industrietechnik mbH, Paderborn, Germany, dealing with process technology in the field of Active Carbon, Biotechnology and Recycling. In 1994 “CCE” concluded a License Agreement with Mr Karl Gustaf Johansson, Halfway House, Midrand, for manufacturing, marketing and sales of his patented invention, the System Johansson Gas Producers. This started a close collaboration with Mr Johansson in which “CCE” invested substantial work and resources to document the engineering of five types of gasifiers with an output capacity range from 120 to 850 Nm³ tar-free gas per hour, with complete sets of workshop drawings, a manufacturing manual, layout drawings and an operation and maintenance manual. “CCE” also initiated basic engineering to establish design data for five larger gasifiers with an output capacity range from 1100 to 2500 Nm³ gas per hour. The whole range is suitable for electrical power generation from 50 to 1200 KVA. There was also substantial development work done by redesigning the hearth reaction zone to widen the range of suitable feedstock to biomass, sawdust- and agricultural waste hard compacted briquettes. In June 1997 “CCE” received a contract, initiated by ESKOM-Industrilek and executed by ESKOM-Technology Group, for manufacturing and installing a Test- and Demonstration Plant of a capacity of 180 Nm³/hr which was completed in February 1998 and proved to exceed it’s design parameters. It has been used to test various Generator / Engine Sets, different Biomass Fuels and has been demonstrated to interested parties from the SA Government, the industry and visitors / clients from abroad. In 2002 “CCE” started co-operating with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Japan and their Research Institute in Akashi in the Government sponsored NEDO Research project for Sustainable Energy Resources and supplied a Gasifier with gasification technology for the plant. The research resulted in “KHI” acquiring the exclusive manufacturing license in Japan, for the 180 and 450 Nm³ Systems, in the fall of 2005.There is increasing interest to establish small power stations with renewable energy sources in Africa and there is a good potential to export the System and to conclude license agreements for manufacturing in other parts of the world.
