The corporations’ origin dates from 1952 when the Goldcoast Government acquired some 63 square miles of land for the development of Tema township. The corporation has evolved into the present form through a number of structural and legislative changes. Currently, it functions under Legislative Instrument 1468 of 1989. its main functions are: a) To plan, layout and develop the Tema area; b) Without prejudice to the general effect of paragraph (a), of this part, the Corporation may for the purpose of the attainment of the objects described in that paragraph and with the prior approval of the Tema District Assembly; i. Construct roads, public building and markets ii. Prepare and execute housing schemes iii. Develop industrial and commercial sites iv. Provide public utilities such as sewerage and street lights; and v. Carry on such other activities as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of the object. The corporation’s major activities have been the construction of houses, management of its rental units, the central sewerage system, planning, controlling and leasing plots for private and large-scale real estate development. The latest major activity that the corporation has added to its operations is the servicing of both residential and commercial plots for lease to private individuals and organizations with the future hope of extending this operation to cover servicing of industrial plots on a large scale.
