Poonga is a mining company whose activities are focused around Central and Southern Africa. We offer opportunities to partner with businesses in the public sector in providing growth across the African continent. The company addresses legislation relevant to our operations and provides employees and contractors with extensive training on relevant environmental standards and compliance issues. This creates awareness for potential environmental impacts and also encourages employees to strive for high levels of competency in their work.

The primary product of the company is gold, coltan and copper, together with by-products, which include magnetite, nickel sulphate, anode slimes, sulphuric acid and vermiculite. The Industrial Minerals division produces and markets vermiculite.

Poonga operates a large block cave mine and smelter complex employing approximately 2000 people. The refinery produces continuous cast rod for the domestic market and cathodes for export.

Refinery

Anodes are placed in the refinery tank house in large cells containing acidified copper sulphate solution.

Underground Mining

Our block-cave mine is a benchmark for integrated design. No other block-cave mine has been put into as competent an ore-body. The height of the cave reaches a record 450 meters in the centre, increasing up to 700 meters on the periphery, making it a world-class mine.

Concentration

Ore from the underground block-cave mine is conveyed to two stockpiles feeding two separate, autogenous wet-grinding circuits.

With four active mines and various other active Poonga projects, significant cultural heritage survey work is undertaken with our Traditional Owner partners. Land Use Agreements continue to be negotiated in new work areas and have been put in place with Native Title claim groups for many of our projects.
