Ugandan coffee production has enjoyed a dramatic recovery over the last decade. Once again, the country can be referred to as the "Pearl of Africa", as described by Winston Churchill in the 1940's. Part of the Ugandan Government recovery program has radically reformed the countries coffee economy. Central direction and control have been replaced by a free market, thus bringing obvious benefits to all levels of the Ugandan coffee industry. Most importantly, the farmer directly benefits from world market prices and is encouraged by tough competition to take exceptional care to produce good quality coffee.

Uganda also produces some fine Arabica coffee: Washed Bugisu from the slopes of Mount Elgon in the East with a crop which starts in October of each year, Washed Wugar from the North Western corner of Uganda, and Dry Drugar from the West.
